A significant Smolenice native Štefan Banič (1870 - 1941) was famous because of his invention of parachute during his stay in America where he had gone because of work.

He saw an air tragedy and this motivated him to invent something which could save pilots' lives. He personally tested the parachute by jumping out of 15 floor building and received a valuable patent. Before his return to his birth place he had sold this patent for only 50 dollars...

You can find out about the Smolenice native's life in a permanent exposition in the Molpír museum.
